Featured Dog Friday

It’s heartbreaking to think about all the senior animals who had once been cherished family pets before they found themselves frightened and alone in a shelter. No dog wants to end up homeless, after all, sitting behind bars in a shelter kennel is hardly anyone’s idea of a good time. Tragically, the dogs who wait the longest are often the ones with the least amount of time to waste.

Meet the beautiful Cerina! Cerina was brought in to the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter in October of 2021 by an Animal Control Officer after her family lost their home. She was quiet, a bit withdrawn and anxious when she first arrived, but who could blame her after losing the only home she had ever known. It thankfully did not take long and Cerina’s resilience began to shine through.

The shelter has stated that Cerina is like an old soul with wisdom to share, so many dogs stay stressed out and have trouble with the chaos that is the day-to-day life in a shelter but not her she is always a ray of sunshine, and she will brighten someone’s world as soon as she is given the opportunity that she is patiently waiting for. She would be thrilled with just the basics, a home of her own, a family to love, a bed to cuddle up in and a window to look out of and get some sunshine on her face. She is sweet, gentle, and looking for her place in this world.

It’s a sad fact that senior dogs like Cerina tend to spend the longest amount of time at a shelter or rescue before finding their forever homes, if they find one at all. Often, they live the rest of their lives out in a shelter kennel. Many of the older dogs become depressed and are overlooked at the shelters for younger, cuter puppies. When people think about adopting a dog they tend to think of a warm, cuddly, tail wagging, wet nosed puppy. While puppies are adorable, there are also great reasons to consider adopting an older dog.

Adopt an older dog and you will see exactly what gratitude really is. They have a special way of showing you how grateful they are for giving them a second chance. They will find the softest, warmest spot in your home and be glad to cuddle up with you. They will stay right by your side, no matter how many episodes of a show you watch. Senior dogs fit into a new home with ease, and are very loyal companions! They love car rides, trips to anyplace and just to be with their people.

This beautiful senior soul is very affectionate and always happy to see you; her head perks up and the tail starts wagging as soon as she sees you coming over to her. She is a love bug and deserves a better life than just existing in an animal shelter.

Cerina is 11 years young and weighs 80 pounds. She is housebroken, knows sit, will give you her paw, is a true delight to walk and spend time with. She loves treats but she has allergies, so she is on a prescription diet and has her own treats specific to allergies as well. The shelter is not sure if Cerinas has just a food allergy, environmental allergies, inside the animal shelter or allergies to grass, pollan and trees. So this medical issue will need to be addressed further.

Allergies are most certainly not a reason to overlook a dog for adoption, and Cerina really deserves a chance to live out her later years in a loving environment. The kind of companionship and care that best meets her needs can’t be found in a busy, noisy, stressful shelter. Yet it is in these shelters that senior dogs like herself often spend weeks, months, or even the rest of their lives while they wait for a potential adopter. Let’s not allow this to happen to Cerina, she has already waited much too long!

Cerina is ready for the next leg of her journey. She must be the one and only pet in a home with children 8 years and up. She is up to date on all vaccinations, spayed, micro-chipped and heartworm negative.

Many people fear that adopting a senior pet will only lead to heartbreak, but instead of worrying about how many years are left, you should focus on the wonderful, fulfilling years you will have together. Cerina still has a lot of love to give and she deserves a human who knows that dogs like her don’t come along that often and when you’re lucky enough to find one, you don’t ever let them go. Can you help make Cerina’s dream come true?

If you care about sweet senior animals as much as we do, help us spread the word, together we can find Cerina a wonderful retirement home where she can kick off her leash, relax her paws, and snuggle in to a warm cozy bed while watching your favorite TV show or just a quiet moment with you gazing at the stars.

Won’t you please open your heart to this beautiful girl and give her the chance she truly deserves? Please go meet her, we guarantee you’ll fall in love!

Today we are re-featuring stunning Koda. Another year has begun and this beautiful girl still sits alone and heartbroken behind shelter walls.

All over the country the story is the same: full shelter, full rescues, sluggish adoption numbers and more pets coming in every day – and the Town of Babylon Animal Shelter is no different.

Koda was surrendered to the shelter in July of 2021 by those she thought would love her forever – abandoned at a shelter because they were moving.

How do abandoned dogs feel? The same way abandoned humans feel — worthless, unwanted, unlovable. Abandoned dogs are known to develop problems which takes time, patience, training and most of all love to work through. Imagine how you’d feel, and that’s how a dog feels. What makes the issue of animal abandonment so tough for us to process is what actually makes someone leave their furry family member they promised to protect and love forever.

Owner surrenders can be some of the most heartbroken dogs we see in the shelters. People don’t seem to understand or accept the reality for the surrendered pet, and what it does to them. We see so many dogs come into shelters, but the ones who really touch our hearts are the owner surrender cases like Koda.

Koda is a very sweet, friendly, cuddly 3-year-old girl who is very anxious about being in the shelter. She is incredibly obedient; very smart, knows her commands, walks well on leash. She likes to stick close to her people and comes right to you when you call her. She is extremely intelligent, loves to learn and would make someone an amazing hiking or running Buddy.

Koda’s previous home reported that she can be afraid of thunder and fireworks and she is not a fan of cats or other dogs. Koda will jump on you for some loving, and will take all the love that you will give her. She loves people, including children; the shelter is recommending households with children 8 years and older because Koda can get a bit mouthy and jumpy.

Sadly, Koda is having a very difficult time with shelter. She is super stressed, anxious;  displaying separation anxiety. Separation anxiety  is one of the most common problems that dogs face, due to the separation from the humans they are attached to – and Koda has lost the only home she has ever known.

Koda would do best in a home where someone is there most of the time since she does not like being away from those she loves. Individuals with dog experience would be best so they can continue to work through her anxiety and help her realize she is safe and will never be abandoned again.

For some dogs, the bond they share with their human becomes so strong that whenever you’re not with them, they become extremely distressed. Anxiety can be triggered by a life event such as a new job or the start of school, but there are other things that might have laid the groundwork for the level of anxiety that Koda is dealing with.

Today, all around the United States, things look dire for the pets in shelters and the people who care for them. Please, open your heart and consider giving Koda the chance she truly deserves! There must be a family out there who is the perfect match for this stunning girl; she is truly special and so deserving.

If you are not in the position to bring home this stunning beauty yourself, you can help by raising awareness of the current problem of full shelters by sharing her story and encouraging others to foster/adopt. Help us find Koda the forever home she really deserves – let’s not allow her to wait any longer.  Make arrangements to meet her, spend time with her, we guarantee you’ll fall in love!

Today we are re-featuring the handsome Floki, another heartbroken, beautiful soul who is looking for someone to share his world with. This spunky, sweet, loving and energetic 4 year old boy has been waiting far too long for a home and family to call his own; a family who will love him and never let him go.

Floki arrived at the Town of Babylon Animal Shelter in May of 2021 after having been found stray. No one ever came looking for him leaving him heartbroken behind shelter walls. He sits in his kennel wondering what he did wrong, and why he spends most of his days and nights behind bars.

Floki loves to play, roll in the grass, learn new tricks and just be with his people. He is a super cuddly and affectionate boy who enjoys giving kisses. A fun boy who walks nicely on a leash, loves people and attention – he would make a fabulous family dog.

Floki does resource guard what is valuable to him, but who could blame him; he really doesn’t have much in this world to call his own and he’s afraid to lose it.  And even though he currently needs to be your one and only pet, he has no issues walking by others. He is off to a great start working daily with his shelter mom – she is even working on socializing him with other dogs. He’s actually met a few friendly females and done great on leash.

The term “resource-guarding” often sends a chill through most people when they hear that a dog they may be interested in adopting exhibits this behavior. Resource guarding is, in fact, a natural, normal canine behavior. For an animal living in the wild, the loss of important resources can mean death. If they allowed other dogs or any other animal who happened along to take their food away, they wouldn’t live long enough for the species to survive.

Whether it’s their favorite toy, a bowl of food or a soft spot on the couch, dogs can become possessive of things and their people –  they consider them valuable. Although some might find seeing their pup guard a favorite toy and think it’s adorable, the cuteness quickly fades away when your dog starts growling or biting to protect their possessions from others.

As for guarding his food and toys, not knowing anything about Floki’s life prior to shelter life, it is difficult to know if this was always something he did or if this is something that has developed in the shelter environment. This behavior could be a result of a past trauma or he feels more inclined to protect the valuables in the shelter. But it is most certainly not a reason for him to live his life behind shelter walls.

The best home for Floki is with a very special family — savvy, experienced, individuals who are committed to him and who understand dogs and their behaviors. Individuals who will put in the time needed to work on building his confidence, continue working on his socialization and his guarding issues.

Floki has a great personality and hasn’t met anyone he doesn’t get along with. He is searching for the loves of his life, a family who will cherish him the way he should be. An active family who will enjoy spending outdoor time with him playing fetch, taking walks, then coming home and relaxing on the couch together. The shelter is recommending households with children ages 12 and up.

Remember when you adopt a dog, you are making the decision to care for them and make them a member of your family. We cannot stress enough how important patience is during the initial stages with any rescue or shelter dog. The beauty in all of this is watching his or her personality emerge as they learn to trust, gain confidence and feel safe.

He sits in his kennel alone, heartbroken and confused wondering if anyone will ever love him the way he deserves; the sadness in his eyes is palpable. Help us find Floki a forever home with a family who will love and cherish him for the rest of his life. Open your heart and give Floki the chance he truly deserves!
