Featured Dog Friday

We have said it many times, but it’s clear to us that this needs to be said again and again; When you choose to add a furry member to your family, you should (in theory) choose to be a responsible owner as well. Unfortunately, not all dog owners act responsibly, many have even abandoned their dogs when they “become inconvenient”.

One of the worst things that can ever happen is to lose your family, yet every year thousands of dogs are abandoned by their owners and find themselves sad and confused in a kennel; they wonder what they ever did to deserve being locked up behind bars. They don’t understand, they can’t understand and it is just beyond heartbreaking.

Meet this handsome hunk, Tyson! Through no fault of his own, poor Tyson has been in and out of the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter several times since December of 2018 – there’s no good reason this should have happened.

The first time, it turned out that Tyson’s Dad was in the hospital and Tyson was supposed to be staying with family until they could be reunited. Not only was Tyson found stray, he was actually found two hours from the family members that were entrusted with keeping him safe. Thankfully, his shelter stay was short and after about 4 months he was adopted.

For the next year and a half, Tyson had a good and happy family life until he sadly found himself homeless yet again. His family had fallen on hard times and wasn’t able to care for him anymore so they brought him back to the shelter. This time was a 5 week long stay and then he was adopted again. His newest family was so excited to make him part of their pack, but just under the two month mark their son’s allergies were more than they could live with and he was sadly returned once again.

A month and a half later, Tyson was adopted and once again it would be just shy of two months when a family member developed severe allergies to Tyson, and he would become a shelter resident again.

Tyson now sits homeless once more, alone and heartbroken behind shelter walls, confused, and wondering what he did wrong to deserve this. Truth is, he has done nothing wrong, none of this is his fault, yet he is the one paying the price. His story just makes our hearts break into a million pieces.

Tyson is a highly adoptable dog in search of a family who will love and cherish him forever! He is a very happy and outgoing guy who loves to be with his people. He is full of energy and has so much personality. He really enjoys playing fetch and chewing on his bones which provide stress relief to him during his shelter stay. According to all his previous families he is housebroken, knows to sit, stay, down and here.

He lived with children and they were great friends; he can get a bit rambunctious and jumpy for little children, so older kids would be best. Tyson does suffer from some separation anxiety and given what has been going on in his life we can completely understand his fear. Separation Anxiety is a common behavior problem we hear about often from pet parents. It appears to be more prevalent among shelter, rescued, or otherwise rehomed dogs. Being surrendered or abandoned can trigger separation anxiety; the stress they experienced is simply too much for them to bare and this has sadly happened to Tyson multiple times

Tyson is a very, very smart, 5 year young boy who will make an amazing family dog! He is incredibly loveable, friendly, sweet, full of energy and fun. He loves to run and play and gets along well with other dogs too. We have been told that he’s such a good boy that they don’t understand why he’s still waiting for his forever home – and neither do we! He is about 65 pounds, up to date on vaccinations, neutered, micro-chipped and heartworm negative.

Tyson needs an active home where he will be your one and only pet. A very special mom and dad — savvy, experienced, patient individuals or family who will commit to him and will put in the time needed to teach him the ropes of life and help him become the best he can be. Tyson is super smart, loves to learn new things, requires guidance, structure and boundaries.

Tyson has a great personality and hasn’t met anyone he doesn’t get along with. He is a high energy boy that requires daily exercise and mental stimulation; he is just being himself, a young dog. Puzzles, games, long walks, hiking or even a good run will help his brain get exercise as well as his body.

Active adventurous dogs like Tyson can make your everyday adventures more fun. Science has proven that dogs can make you happier, healthier, fitter, and can even help you live longer. There’s no shortage of dogs who will gladly join you in every adventure, but you can’t just have any dog tagging along with you. A high energy dog can be a ton of fun since they love to play, learn and accompany you on adventures. If you are looking for a sporty pal Tyson is your man!

This super affectionate boy also gives hugs by wrapping his front legs around your waist and resting his head on your belly. He absolutely loves to play; however since he is still young and has not had the proper guidance growing up, he is not always able to differentiate between his toys and your stuff so a close eye will need to be on him until he learns the rules of the home. Simply cleaning up your shoes and such so he won’t be able to chew on them will be necessary. Tyson really needs someone in his life that will take the time to work on his doggie manners and continue his training.

Canine companions make for some of the best friends we could wish for. They play with us, cuddle with us, listen to us and make us feel like the most special people on the planet the moment we walk through the front door. We love them, and they love us. Of all the emotions dogs experience and express, love is probably the one that touches our hearts the most. So why not give Tyson the chance to show you his stuff?

If you are in a position to adopt this handsome boy, please contact the shelter, make arrangements to meet him, take him home and make him part of your family. We guarantee the love you receive in return will be the best feeling you have ever felt in your entire life!
