Featured Dog Friday

The unconditional love a dog can bring to your life is priceless; hearing pawsteps coming to the door when you arrive home after a long work day, or having a running partner to keep you motivated are just fractions of the goodness that dogs provide.

All dogs deserve a home with a loving family. While many do find happiness, some are repeatedly overlooked because they have traits that seem to make them less adoptable, and sometimes, for no apparent reason, the nicest dog is stuck in the shelter for far too long. The only difference between overlooked dogs and all the other dogs in the shelter, is just what the name implies—they’ve been overlooked.

Today, we are once again re-featuring the handsome Finnley! Finn is an adorable, 6 year young boy who just wants to be loved but sadly continues to be overlooked. He is the second longest resident in the shelter and it is beyond heartbreaking.

In his previous life, Finn spent his time chained up in a pen and was in terrible condition. He was thankfully rescued from this horrible situation and brought to the Babylon Animal Shelter in September of 2019 where he has been waiting for that one special person to come take him home.

Once he trusts you, Finn is a super sweet and very affectionate boy. Trust is an essential component of the human-canine relationship; unsocialized dogs like Finn have had few experiences to help them predict what life should be like, and they lack the simple foundation for building trust. Dogs that have been poorly treated or had bad experiences may react with suspicion to strangers, and dogs that have suffered traumatic events, can be suspicious of everything related to that event. Finn has come a long way since his arrival at the shelter, he is learning to trust the world that surrounds him, is doing really well with meeting new people, and how to simply be a dog.

Finn loves laying in the sun, splashing in the pool, playing fetch, taking walks, and cuddling. He is very smart; he loves learning, and learns commands quickly. Although Finn walks nicely on a leash, he is very reactive to other dogs passing by – he suffers from fear based reactivity. For those not familiar, fear based reactivity is a feeling of apprehension associated with the presence or proximity of a person, dog/animal, or situation – either social or environmental. The number one reason for this behavior is a lack of quality and positive socialization. Socialization is very important to dogs, especially when they are young. Puppies that don’t have a chance to meet a wide variety of people or even other dogs are more likely to develop a fear of those they don’t know.

Finn is searching for a very special Mom or Dad; dog savvy, experienced, patient individuals who are committed to him and will put in the time needed to gain his trust and continue to work on his insecurities. A loving family that will give him the time he needs to decompress, and adjust to home life.

The shelter is recommending households where Finn will be the one and only pet with children who are at least in their teens. A fenced in yard is a must, and Finn requires a meet and greet at the shelter. The shelter has stated that out of state adoption is possible as long as the adopter is willing to come to the shelter for the meet and greet.

The unconditional love a dog brings to your life is priceless; hearing paws coming to the door when you arrive home after a long work day, or having a running partner to keep you motivated are just fractions of the goodness that dogs provide.

You’ve all read our stories and celebrated when you heard that a long time shelter dog has been adopted after being at a shelter for many years. Well, Finn has been at the shelter waiting for his forever home far too long and he needs our help too. He sits in his kennel just waiting for someone to spare a glance at him yet he keeps getting passed by. Won’t someone please give him a chance?

    1. Finn is not one of our dogs, he is a resident at a municipal shelter located in New York.

This shelter does not transport dogs; an in person meet and greet is required at the shelter.
