Puppermint Canes

Do you ever bake your dog special treats for the holidays? We can’t resist! The look of joy and the excited wagging of the tail is all it takes to make our day.

This recipe is perfect for serving your pup at holiday parties and makes a great gift for other furry friends!

Ingredients:

  • 3 cups whole wheat flour
  • ½ cup powdered milk
  • 1 cup chicken broth (if store-bought make sure to check the ingredients to make sure there’s nothing dangerous in it for your pup)
  • 2 large eggs (one for egg wash)
  • 1 teaspoon peppermint oil
  • red food coloring (optional, a little bit of food coloring that we use for human consumption is not dangerous to your pup)

Instructions:

  • whisk all wet ingredients together until well combined
  • add your dry ingredients, one at a time (stir well between each added ingredient)
  • knead dough on floured surface
  • divide dough in half
  • make a well in one half and add the peppermint oil and food coloring
  • work in food coloring until you get your desired color
  • put both dough batches in a bowl, cover, and refrigerate for 1 hour so the dough gets firm

  • preheat oven to 350
  • whisk an egg for egg wash
  • when you remove the dough from refrigerator, break up dough batches into an equal number of pieces (depending on size of the treats you want to make)
  • roll each piece of dough into a small snake-like shape
  • twist one of each color together and bend at end to create a hook shape

  • place “Candy Canes” on baking sheet and brush them with egg wash
  • bake for 10-12 minutes (oven times may vary)
  • cool completely and store in an airtight container
