People seem to be under the impression that if they drop their older dog off at the shelter, they will get adopted and have a great life with someone else. I’m here to tell those people, that just isn’t the case, which is so heartbreaking. Shelters are full of older dogs hoping for a second chance at life; many of them were onced owned and loved by someone, but for whatever reason ended up homeless.
A shelter much like the one described is the Town of Hempstead Animal Shelter in NY. Paws Give Me Purpose recently paid a second visit to the shelter and spent one on one time with many of the dogs. I can tell you first hand, that many of the older dogs are depressed and overlooked at the shelter for young, cute puppies. When people think about adopting a dog, they tend to think of a cuddly, tail wagging, wet-nosed puppy. While puppies are adorable, there are many great older dogs waiting for someone to give them a second chance; they too are cuddly, tail wagging and adorable!
On our visit to the shelter, we met one wonderful pup named Heaven. Heaven’s family dumped her at the shelter in May of 2017 after 8 years of love and loyalty. No one really understands why her family did this to her, especially Heaven who is very scared and confused. Is this how Heavens story will end, sitting behind bars for the rest of her life?
I have watched too many senior shelter dogs leave this earth never really knowing what it’s like to belong to someone and I refuse to let that be Heavens fate. This girl is too full of life to be cooped up in a cage. You may be reluctant to adopt a senior dog because you fear that the that the time with your new best friend will be short, but know that the privilege of loving a senior dog makes every day more special!
Heaven is 8 years young, we met her up close and personal and I can tell you she still acts like a puppy! She is house trained, crate trained and knows many commands. Unlike a puppy, Heaven has already grown into who she is, she has developed a very friendly and playful personality. She loves people, but is also a bit of a diva, needing to be a solo dog in a home–Heaven loves to be the center of attention! While she does guard her food and toys at the shelter, it is most likely due to fear of losing it like she lost her home.
Here I am dear family, friends, readers and followers, asking for your help. PLEASE GIVE HEAVEN A HOME FOR THE NEW YEAR!!! She’s been in the shelter WAY TOO LONG! She REALLY needs to get out of the shelter kennel. She is stuck behind bars all day long. That is no way for any dog to spend their days, especially not during their Golden Years! You will share companionship, and a special friendship that grows stronger because of the knowledge that you have given an older dog a second chance at life.
If you are not in a position to adopt or foster, I ask that you PLEASE SHARE Heaven with everyone you know and ask them to share too. Help me network this beautiful girl! Together we can find a loving home/family for her. Head over to her Facebook page, like and share that too.
