Butternut Squash Doggie Stew

This healthy stew will surely warm your pup up after a chilly walk or playtime outside on a winter day!

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound boneless, skinless chicken thighs or beef
  • 1 cup frozen green peas
  • 8 ounces frozen butternut squash
  • 1 cup whole grain rice or barley
  • extra virgin olive oil
  • low sodium chicken stock (optional)

Instructions:

  • heat a large stew pot with a little olive oil in it on medium heat
  • cut your chicken or beef into 1 inch chunks
  • place your chicken or beef pieces in pot, and brown, turning to get all sides
  • add the frozen green peas and stir
  • add the squash over the beef/chicken and peas, stir
  • cover pot, and allow squash to thaw for about 2 minutes
  • when squash is thawed stir all ingredients together
  • pour in the uncooked whole-grain rice or barley
  • allow the liquid in the pot to come to a slow boil
  • reduce the heat to low, cover, and simmer until grain is fully cooked
  • once your grain is cooked, give the stew a final stir
  • allow stew to cool completely before feeding to your pup

*If your stew gets thick, you can thin it with some low-sodium chicken stock
