Welcome Charlie Freckles

Once the love of someone’s life, this little old man has sadly found himself at a shelter just days away from Valentine’s Day – a day celebrating love and affection.

This past weekend, we officially welcomed our newest Sanctuary resident, Mr. Charlie Freckles, to Paws Give Me Purpose.

At 15+ years of age and just 10 pounds this cutie pie was surrendered to the shelter after reportedly becoming snappy with people in the home. Since being in our care, it’s become clear that Charlie only becomes snappy because he’s in pain.

Upon examination, our Veterinary team noted that Charlie has significant dental disease, immature cataracts, a few dermal masses, and a slight abnormal hindlimb gait. He was friendly and cooperative throughout most of his exam, but because he’s so uncomfortable, he did become snappy during parts of his exam.

We are currently treating him for pain and inflammation and are hoping he starts to feel a little better soon. He will need hindlimb radiographs and complete blood work in order to determine the best way for us to help him feel his best and enjoy his golden years to the fullest.

We will never really know everything about Charlie’s life, but we do know that no senior should spend their days in a shelter. Charlie needed a comfy and cozy spot to continue his retirement, filled with nothing but love and happiness and with your support, we will make it happen!

Without your support, special needs dogs like Charlie Freckles would have nowhere to go. Your donations saved his life and so many others. We thank you all for giving us the ability to do what we do.

We ask that you please consider making a donation to help us with Charlie’s care.

In Memory Of Betty

Today was a very sad and difficult day here at Paws Give Me Purpose Sanctuary. Our beautiful Betty Boop gained her angel wings naturally and peacefully on her own terms, she even got to spend her last moments in the arms of one of her rescuers.

At 17 years old, Betty had a host of serious medical issues and was considered a hospice case to most, but to us she was another beautiful special needs senior soul who did not deserve to die in a shelter.

Betty’s smile and wiggly, almost flirty walk would light up everyone’s day here at the Sanctuary. Her sweet demeanor captured the hearts of all those that knew her human and dog alike.

Snickers the Doxie was her little boyfriend, and the way they would nuzzle and cuddle up to each other made them the cutest couple in the world to us. Lucy, her “old lady” friend – would sit with her and they would walk around together as if they were 2 best friends chatting the day away. Betty has left behind two very heartbroken dogs and many human friends who loved her dearly.

Sometimes, Paws Give Me Purpose is that special place where dogs like Betty come to cross that bridge with dignity and love. Our promise to Betty was to provide her with a safe and loving environment for the rest of her life and we kept that promise.

You were only with us for a short time sweet Betty, but you’ll be a part of our hearts forever. We were blessed to have known you!

Sneak Peek

On top of the already busy daily schedule here at the Sanctuary, the passing of Oscar, and Victor suddenly needing emergency medical care, things have been extra busy around here and we truly have not had the chance to introduce our newest Sanctuary resident – we apologize for the delay.

Let us begin this introduction by stating that yes, you will all find this little boy looks cute and cuddly, and we agree he looks cute, he is most definitely not cuddly and not available for adoption. So please, do not flood our inboxes and emails with adoption inquiries!

This is a very hot, spicy little Chihuahua who we have named Tito. Tito arrived about 2 weeks ago, and for the lack of a better term he is a behavioral mess.

Tito was found as a stray on the streets of Prince George’s County and estimated to be about 6-7 years old and weighs 4 pounds. He is extremely emaciated, fearful, unsocialized, has severe guarding issues, and is a biter. We believe this little boy has either been a street dog his entire life or has come from some kind of puppy mill/breeder where he has never known a human touch or kindness.

Tito was picked up by animal control and brought to the shelter. Two rescues tagged Tito immediately after seeing his cute “came in as a stray” posting because they felt he was such an adorable Chihuahua that he would be adopted into a home quickly; as it turned out, once both rescues heard about his behavior and that the shelter could not even handle him, they backed out leaving Tito with zero options and the shelter with a dog they could not adopt out to the public. That is when the shelter reached out to us wanting to save his life.

We believe Tito’s life matters and we could not say no. When a senior, hospice, special needs, or difficult to adopt dog is brought into a shelter, we are the one they call. When a rescue finds that one of the dogs they thought was adoptable needs a special place to spend the rest of their lives, we are the one they call. We are able to take in and provide for only a limited number of dogs at any given time (determined on a case by case basis).

Sometimes dogs come to us so ill or emotionally damaged; re-homing them is not in their best interest. We offer Sanctuary and lots of love for these dogs for the rest of their lives and this may be the case for Tito.

On occasion, we house dogs that can be rehabilitated and move onto forever homes, and if that does indeed become the case with Tito down the road, he would become available for adoption through one of our rescue partners. We at Paws Give Me Purpose do not handle adoptions.

For now, Tito is a Sanctuary resident that requires full medical and major behavioral care. Our funds have been depleted and we need your help now more than ever!

Tito came to us because no one else stepped up to help him during his time of need and we will provide him with the love and special care he might otherwise never know. Our promise is to provide Tito with a safe and loving environment for the rest of his life.

We ask that you please consider making a donation to help us with Tito’s care. If anyone is interested in sponsoring Tito, please reach out to us directly.
