Remembering Hershey

Even though we knew his time with us would be very short, our promise to Hershey was to provide him with a safe and loving environment for the rest of his life, and we kept that promise.

Little Hershey passed on his own terms, peacefully in his sleep – and our hearts are broken once again.

Hershey arrived at Paws Give Me Purpose Sanctuary back in January after having been found on the city streets of Staten Island, he ended up behind shelter walls. He was technically categorized as a hospice case and needed a place to live out the remainder of his days, so we answered the plea for help – his life mattered!

Hershey was 15+ years old and suffered from medical issues including failing back legs. You would have never known that he wasn’t 100% healthy as nothing seemed to bother him.

Just like the great American chocolate bar, little Hershey was sweet as can be; he most certainly did not deserve the severe neglect and abandonment that he received. We did our best to make things better.

This tiny senior soul was a bright light here at our Sanctuary; he made friends easily, enjoying both the company of humans and the other tiny dogs. Most of his time however was spent with his little girl friend Tiny Tina – he fell head over heals the moment they met and never left her side. They quickly became the new “it couple” here at our Sanctuary and watching them together gave us many awww moments – moments of forever, moments we will never forget.

Aside from cuddling his precious Tina, Hershey enjoyed laying in human laps, relaxing in the sun, receiving affection, returning kisses and truly enjoyed every snack and morsel of food we served. You could tell just by his sheer excitement to receive a meal or treat that he did not have these opportunities before – he savored every bite, and in true Chi fashion no other dog was allowed near. There was no denying him anything, he was spoiled as much as possible and he seemed to really know he had been given a second chance, and readily showed his gratitude.

Despite facing health challenges, his happy spirit never wavered; he touched our lives briefly but profoundly. Although he would get a bit testy at times with us humans, he was pure love and just wanted to be close to those he loved. His small but mighty Chi presence will be dearly missed.

You will always live on in our hearts Hershey, we were blessed to have known and been able to love you with our whole hearts!

Thank you to all of our followers and supporters for caring; for we know you grieve with us too. Thank you also for being a support to us during this difficult time.

Welcome Princess

Mere hours from euthanasia, we received an urgent heartbreaking plea from one of our shelter partners about yet another abandoned senior needing emergency placement.

We literally only had until 4:30 that day to save her life, and our dedicated volunteer Shelley rushed to the shelter and made it just in time.

In precious Flower’s memory, the Paws Give Me Purpose Team welcomes the beautiful Princess to Sanctuary.

Princess was surrendered to the shelter by the only family she has ever known as they were no longer able to care for her. After over 17 years of love, loyalty, and devotion to her humans, Princess deserves to be loved and treated with dignity.

She is completely blind in her left eye with limited vision in the other, has significant periodontal disease, mammary gland tumors, bilaterally symmetric alopecia, possible endocrine disease (Cushing’s) and has pendulous abdomen.

We need YOUR help in order to give this precious girl everything she needs, including the best Vet care possible; we never settle for substandard care. We just hope we were in time to give this sweetheart the golden years she deserves.

Please open your hearts, help us fight to give Princess the opportunity to live the best life possible in her remaining years. We cannot do this without YOU!

Flower

This is the face of a tiny dog that was abandoned in her carrier on the streets of NY in the most horrendous, neglectful condition.

This is the face of a dog that due to her medical condition was given less than 24 hours to leave the shelter or she would be euthanized.

This is the face of a dog who, other than her lost and found posting, was not shared on social media; no one knew she even existed. It was clear based on her condition that no one was coming to take her home.

This is the face of a dog whose heart wrenching plea moved us to tears, so we moved heaven and earth and took her under our wings. This is the face of a dog who we scrambled to save.

Together with our rescue partner Remember Me Rescue NY and our volunteer transporter Rachel we were able to bring her to Sanctuary – her life mattered and she deserved to know love, kindness, and dignity.

This is the face of a dog who was happy to be safe, happy to have a warm bed, blankets, good food to eat and urgent vet care.

This face belongs to Flower. Flower was 14 years old, her neglectful condition was criminal. She arrived on Tuesday and quickly gained her Angel wings on Friday in the arms of Sanctuary mom.

In the few days Flower spent here with us, she knew more love, compassion, kindness and care than she ever had in her entire life.

Flower left this world with a smile on her face and we hope her brief time here was enough to wash away her painful past and leave her only with good memories.

This is the face of a dog we will never forget – she left her tiny paw prints on our hearts, and her spirit will live within the walls of PGMP forever.
