Meet Maggie

Our hearts broke when we received the urgent plea for help for a very special girl; we immediately took her under our wing and into our care.

We have named this precious soul Maggie, aka our little Magpie. She has suffered the ultimate betrayal of abandonment and because she suddenly went completely blind (which went unnoticed by those who promised to love her forever), she is more afraid and confused than ever. It is up to us to make things right for her – and we need YOUR help to do that.

Maggie was originally adopted from the Voorhees Animal Orphanage a couple of years ago and was recently returned. Her adopter stated that she had too much anxiety, even though she knew she was a nervous dog when she adopted her. It was also stated she “couldn’t afford her medical care”.

When Maggie arrived back at the shelter, she appeared to have some allergy issues, but otherwise looked fine.

Unfortunately while in the shelter’s care, the kennel staff found her running around bumping into things,  blind in her kennel and having bloody diarrhea. Her blood sugar was sky high and she was diagnosed with DKA, Diabetic ketoacidosis.

For those not familiar, DKA is a life-threatening complication of diabetes mellitus in dogs. It occurs when the body does not have enough insulin to use glucose for energy, leading to the accumulation of ketones in the blood and urine.

The vet had the shelter immediately start insulin, but it was no place for her to get the proper care she needed; that’s when they reached out to us for help.

Maggie arrived at PGMP on March 10, and immediately received and will continue to receive the very best medical care possible; we never settle for substandard care.

Please open your hearts, help us fight to give Maggie the opportunity to live her best life daily – we cannot do this without YOU!

Meet Marvin

We received a code red from our Philadelphia shelter partner about a tiny senior boy in dire need. We could not ignore it, so one of our volunteers rushed to the shelter to save this precious soul and bring him to Sanctuary.

Found wandering the streets alone, he arrived at the shelter in the most horrible medical condition. We just hope we were in time to give this little sweetheart the golden years he truly deserves.

We have named him Marvin. Marvin’s medical neglect is beyond our comprehension. He is a walking skeleton, it is clear he was starved. His body condition score is a 1/9; extreme muscle wasting. He has difficulty walking on his hind legs and walks with a wide/low stance and hunched posture. He is also in end stage dental disease with most of his teeth missing and the ones that remain are infected. Clearly Marvin has been seriously neglected for a long time.

Immediate supportive care has begun. He will continue to receive the expert care he needs and deserves for as long as he is with us. It goes without saying that we will do whatever is necessary to help Marvin feel his best and be the happiest and most comfortable he can be.

Our promise to Marvin is to provide him with a safe and loving environment for the rest of his life and we are committed to keeping this promise.

We ask that you please consider making a donation to help us with his care – we cannot do this without YOU!

Meet Phil

Mere hours from euthanasia, we received an urgent, heartbreaking code red from one of our shelter partners about an abandoned senior dog in horrific condition.

Found wandering on the cold streets of Philadelphia, helpless at a mere 3.5 pounds, the plea for help broke our hearts. We immediately took him under our wing and into our care.

Dogs love sincerely, with all their hearts, with all their soul and are unable to understand that human ‘love forever’ often has an expiration date and they are no longer wanted – but there is absolutely NO excuse for this level of neglect!

We have named this precious boy Phil and he has already shown us his desire for life, for love and this second chance.

Little Phil is intact and cryptorchid. He has no teeth, but does have an oronasal fistula on the right side of his mouth at the location of where one of his canines would be. He has significant bone recession in both maxilla and mandible. His undercoat is matted, his skin is very thin, covered in sores and a massive amount of flea dirt. He is a walking skeleton with hair – his body condition is extremely poor, a 2.5-3/9, with significant muscle wasting.

Phil is receiving the urgent medical care he needs and deserves; he will continue to receive only the best medical care and rehabilitation possible – we won’t settle for anything less. Our promise to Phil is to provide him with a safe and loving environment for the rest of his life and we are committed to keeping this promise.

We ask that you please consider making a donation to help us with Phil’s care – we cannot do this without YOU!
