From the way dogs wag their tails, climb into our laps, and steal our beds, it certainly seems like they love us. Not only do dogs love us, they actually see us as their family. Dogs rely on humans more than they do their own kind for affection, protection and everything in between.
Canine companions make for some of the best friends we could wish for. They play with us, cuddle with us, listen to us and make us feel like the most special people on the planet the moment we walk through the front door. We love them, and they love us. Of all the emotions dogs experience and express, love is probably the one that touches our hearts the most.
Take a look at this adorable little nugget, Athena! This stunning girl was brought to the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter, in December of 2021 for her own well-being due to an unacceptable living situation. Sadly, she now finds herself waiting almost a year behind shelter walls hoping her hero comes through the doors to take her home and give her the forever she was promised.
Athena is an outgoing, playful, perfectly petite 34 pound girl, estimated to be between 2 to 4 years young. She has a very fun, bubbly personality, and will bring you many laughs and lots of fun. Athena loves people, is very high energy, extremely smart and loves to learn. As tiny as she is, Athena is a little powerhouse, is a jumper, and will actually stand up on her back legs and follow you like that just to get your attention.
Athena did not arrive with any manners or skills, so she will require someone who is willing to start at the beginning and give her all the tools she needs to be a well trained/behaved girl. She is very affectionate and loves getting pets, belly rubs and giving kisses. She didn’t really know how to engage with toys or bones when she first arrived at the shelter, but has now become very interested in them – she absolutely loves licking clean a frozen peanut butter filled Kong.
She is highly treat motivated, making training come with ease! She is always eager to go on a walk or have playtime. Athena just wants to be with you – her favorite thing is spending quality time with people. She even loves giving big hugs and literally will wrap her arms around you.
Athena is a truly beautiful girl inside and out! She needs a very special home with a highly active mom and dad, who can devote their time and attention to her. She is a high energy girl who would love a runner or an athlete as a best friend. Although she has begun to blossom at the shelter, the environment is extremely overstimulating making it difficult for her to relax and calm down. She needs a savvy experienced patient family who will give her the time she needs to decompress and learn the ropes of life.
She will need to be the one and only pet in a home, no other dogs, no cats and due to her lack of manners and jumpy behavior the shelter is recommending households with children over the age of 14. Athena is up to date on vaccinations, spayed, micro-chipped and heartworm negative.
Active adventurous dogs like Athena can make your everyday adventures more fun. Science has proven that dogs can make you happier, healthier, fitter, and can even help you live longer. There’s no shortage of dogs who will gladly join you in every adventure, but you can’t just have any dog tagging along with you. Athena is young and has lots of energy to expend and will need exercise on a daily basis. She requires structure and someone who will show her how to be the best girl she can be!
She has so much love to give, you literally can’t walk past her without her trying to hug or kiss you. She has had little opportunity in her life, she certainly did not have what we would call a normal happy life. However, that is exactly what she truly deserves – what all dogs deserve! Athena is just waiting for her day to shine and to have a family of her own to love.
Athena is searching for the loves of her life, an active family who will enjoy spending outdoor time with her playing fetch, taking walks, maybe even raking the leaves together, then coming home and relaxing on the couch together. A high energy dog can be a ton of fun since they love to play, learn and accompany you on all your adventures. If this is what you are looking for in a furry family member, Athena is your girl!
Athena has been at the shelter waiting far too long; won’t someone please give her a chance? She is truly special and so deserving of a home and family to call her own.
