Featured Dog Friday

There is just something so special about watching dogs interact with each other in a loving way. Adopting a bonded pair of dogs can be a rewarding experience for both the pets and their humans. Believe it or not, a pair of bonded pets is often less work than single pets, they keep each other entertained and help prevent some of the separation anxiety issues that often occur when pets are left alone. If you’re looking for a pair of dogs, it’s easier to adopt two that you’re sure will get along. Happy dogs equal a happy owner!

Bonded dogs might be siblings, a parent and offspring, or just friends that were raised together from a young age. If a pair is truly bonded with a balanced and healthy relationship, splitting the pair can cause a grieving period and contribute to considerable behavioral issues in a new home. Bonded pairs give each other some stability, and often one follows the other’s lead, helping the more passive one to adjust more quickly.

Meet Max and Josie; these two are such an  adorable pair! Their world was turned upside down when they were found as strays and a Good Samaritan brought them to the Town of Brookhaven Animal Shelter in November of 2020. They patiently waited for their family to come find them and take them home, sadly that never happened.

When Max and Josie first arrived at the shelter, they were a bit nervous; since then they have settled in and made themselves very comfortable. Max was a tad shy, but as soon as he saw Josie he was immediately outgoing and super happy. While at the shelter they have made many friends and look forward to going out for their walks and time out playing together everyday.

Max and Josie are an extremely bonded pair and will need to stay together. Max will lay on the floor and Josie will literally sit on his back like he is a couch. By considering quality of life, bonded pairs should remain together whenever possible. Adopting a bonded pair of dogs can be a rewarding experience for the dogs and their humans. If you think that having two dogs is double the work, think again! Adopting a pair can actually end up being less work since many destructive behaviors are due to boredom or separation anxiety. A built-in playmate naturally provides stimulation and security needed to reduce the potential for these behaviors to develop. It can also alleviate concerns about leaving your dog alone while at work.

Max is 7-8 years young, 86 pounds, and Josie is 5-6 years young, 61 pounds. They are both up to date on vaccinations, both altered, micro-chipped and are heartworm negative. When they arrived and were seen by the shelter’s Veterinarian it was determined that Max had two spots that required a biopsy and the results came back as Mast Cell tumors. The surgery did result in good margins and a complete excision of the two tumors. He will need to be monitored closely and if any lumps or bumps arise it will require immediate Veterinary attention.

They are both very sweet dogs, and are truly deserving of a home where they will be loved and cherished forever. They are playful and affectionate with people and each other, they will definitely keep you laughing and entertained. Max and Josie have both shown no interest in toys, they walk beautifully together on leash, know sit and will wait for their treats.

These two sweethearts are great with adults and the shelter is recommending households with children ages 14 and up. They would do best in a home with just the two of them, no other pets. They are so bonded they do EVERYTHING together; they must be adopted together. A bond between two dogs like Max and Josie is one where they provide each other with strengths that the other lacks. When together, they thrive in social situations due to the confidence that their partner gives them, which they may otherwise may not have. Though they may seem vulnerable when away from their partner, the absolute best is brought out in both when they are together.

Max and Josie are hoping that their stay at the shelter is a short one. They are patiently waiting for their second chance at a good life with a family to love. Could that family be yours? They truly make each other a better dog, in the way that a human hopes their spouse makes them a better person. Bonded pairs take care of each other, encourage one another, and truly allow the other dog to be happy or fulfilled. If you want this kind of love in your life, bring this beautiful bonded pair home — you won’t regret it!
