Featured Dog Friday

Are you a person whose heart and home doesn’t feel complete without the sound of paws galloping to greet you at the door? Are you in search of a good-natured, fun loving pup to be the newest member of your family? Then why not save a life and adopt a senior dog!

Senior dogs are too often overlooked by potential adopters at shelters and rescues; however, those who adopt senior dogs know them to be wonderful companions. Senior dogs are more mellow, better mannered, and quicker to adjust to their new homes than younger dogs. Senior dogs can be one of the sweetest, most loyal friends you’ll ever have. The only thing better than a new best friend is an old best friend; love has no age limit.

It’s heartbreaking to think about all the senior animals who had once been cherished family pets before they found themselves frightened and alone in a shelter. No dog wants to end up homeless, after all, sitting behind bars in a shelter kennel is hardly anyone’s idea of a good time. Tragically, the dogs who wait the longest are often the ones with the least amount of time to waste.

This week’s Featured Dog Friday really needs our help and he needs it now! Take a look at this stunning boy Sky. Sky is the sweetest 11 year old man you’ll ever meet. He arrived at the Babylon Animal Shelter in May of this year, his older body showing wear and tear. Most recently while in the shelter, Sky suffered a bad seizure, and had a mild stroke – we are beyond heartbroken for him.

Sky’s situation is urgent, a rescue is on standby to pull; we need an immediate hospice foster or adopter. Don’t let life alone in a kennel be all Sky knows before he leaves this world!

Sky deserves the chance to live out his later years in a loving environment. The kind of companionship and care that best meets his needs can’t be found in a busy, noisy, stressful shelter; yet it is in these shelters that senior dogs often spend weeks, months, or even the rest of their lives while they wait for a potential adopter. Let’s not allow this to happen to Sky.

This handsome Husky loves people, is super affectionate, walks like a gentleman on a leash, enjoys playing in the yard and splashing in the pool. All he asks for are the simple things in life, to be loved, a soft bed to lay his head and a place to call home.

Huskies make great pets and are naturally friendly, sociable, and amazing with children. Huskies are pack-orientated dogs and despite being somewhat independent, they crave company, especially human company. They are very loyal, and even-keeled when it comes to temperament. Huskies are however notorious for their stubbornness, and would much rather do things their way than abide by house rules. Husky owners need to be patient, determined, and consistent.

The shelter has stated that Sky has some typical Husky behaviors and he seems to be dog selective – a meet and greet is required. He needs a savvy Husky experienced home and the shelter is desperately trying to find that special someone who can give him a home where he can kick off his leash, snuggle into a warm cozy bed or just spend a quiet moment with you gazing at the stars.

Like all Huskies, Sky does have some energy, so it would be nice for him to have a fenced yard to play in and maybe one other calm female Husky friend to be with. He has never been around children, so for this reason the shelter is recommending households with older kids, 10 and up.

You may be reluctant to adopt a senior dog (especially one with health issues) because you fear that the time with your new best friend will be short, but know that the privilege of loving Sky will make every day more special! No one really knows how much time they’ll have with any animal, but when you rescue a dog like Sky he will most definitely thrive in a home environment and exceed the time you think you are going to have with him.

Nothing in life is guaranteed, so it’s best to enjoy every moment with your pet, regardless of their age. No love is deeper and more meaningful than the love of a pet for the human who saves him, this is the kind of love that will change you forever!

Please open your heart, Sky needs a foster or adopter now, there is no time to waste. If you care about sweet senior animals as much as we do, help us spread the word!
