We are truly at a loss for words…the code red plea we received was not one we could turn away. The alternative would have been allowing her to die in pain, scared, confused and alone behind shelter walls.
Meet precious Chi Chi, yet another senior soul left out on the streets of Philadelphia to fend for herself. She was in horrible condition, and there are no words to even describe our anger.
And please don’t tell us, “maybe they couldn’t afford vet care”. This mammary mass did not grow larger than the dog herself overnight. She should have been surrendered to a shelter when the mass was tiny giving a rescue the chance to save her life.
This is a clear case of abuse and neglect, then abandonment. This behavior is criminal, and yet no one will ever be charged for this crime.
Her body tells us a story of long-term neglect and hardship. We have no way of knowing how long she had suffered dragging around this tumor that likely weighs more than she does or how long she has endured pain with no relief. Regardless, this horrific chapter of her life is now over.
The more difficult news for us to process is that unfortunately due to the extremely large size of the mass and the tiny size of the dog, surgery is not an option. There is not enough space to acquire good margins, nor will there be any skin left to close up her tiny body.
This lead us to a ton of research, and we are going to try something called Immunocidin® which is a veterinary biologic for the treatment of mammary cancer in dogs. A USDA and CFIA-approved immunotherapeutic for the treatment of mixed mammary tumor and mammary adenocarcinoma in dogs.
This treatment has a high tumor-free survival rate, is well tolerated by dogs, including older dogs that are poor surgical risks and stimulates a dog’s natural defense mechanism.
This precious girl has been suffering for a long time and desperately needs us – we cannot not let her down.
Hospice is not about giving up; it’s about focusing on comfort and giving the best quality of life. Quality of life is very important to us here at Paws Give Me Purpose.
It may be too late, and it’s not at all enough, but in the end we know that we are doing the right thing.
